STCC Turns 11 on New Year's Day

1 January 2011, Central Luzon State University, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. - The Sto. Tomas Church of Christ (STCC) celebrates today Her 11th founding anniversary through a special Sunday celebration program held at the CLSU Interfaith Chapel in the campus of this state university. Program celebration includes the usual Praise and Worship service plus the recognition of the Church leaders and officers via gift-giving, issuance of baptismal certificates for six recently baptized souls, and a simple merienda fellowship.

Recognized and awarded with gifts (courtesy of Sis. Rose as pasalubong from California) were the 7 couples who serve this congregation as elders, deacons and deaconesses, with specific functions as either chair of different working committees, Church secretary, treasurer, P/W leader and the like. Similarly, six souls who were immersed last November-Thanksgiving Sunday were issued with certificate of baptism.

STCC was founded, and held Her first corporate worship celebration on the first Sunday of 2001, as part of the 100-Centennial Church planting project of the Churches of Christ/Christian Churches in the Philippines, to commemorate one hundred years of the coming to this country of the non-denominational Church of Christ as rooted from the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement of Europe and America. STCC started as an outreach of Munoz Church of Christ, and eventually became an autonomous independent church of Christ anchored on New Testament teachings.

Today, STCC remains faithful as a purpose-driven Church with the following mandates: Evangelism, Ministry, Discipleship, Worship and Fellowship, as modelled and systematized by that famous world-renowned evangelist Rick Warren. Her current elders are Bro. Mario Salazar and this reporter. (Bro. Josue S. Falla reports)

Sis-in-Christ Lydia O. Tadatada, 84 Finally Laid to Rest

19 December 2011, Munoz Science City, Nueva Ecija. - It's a tricky day, as it seems Filipinos are in quandary whether to sing "Silent Night, Holy Night", a solemn song, or shout with "Joy to the World" celebrating the yuletide season. Why? Two significant events are in our midst - it's Christmas time to celebrate, and the occurence of typhoon "Sendong" which is currently devastating southern Philippines, Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities in particular.

Similarly, Nueva Ecija Christians particularly those from Munoz, were in the same predicament whether to celebrate or to mourn, as a dear Church mother Sis. Lydia Tadatada is laid to rest today, just a day after her 84th birthday on Dec. 18.

Nanay Lydia, as she was fondly called in the Christian circle, was born in Aliaga, Nueva Ecija to Gavino M. Olanda and Elena D. Santos. She has 2 sisters, Margarita O. De Jesus (deceased) and Norma O. Verde. She was married to Alfredo Jose Tadatada on May 14, 1964. She finished her AB Political Science and BSE at Far Eastern University. She taught at Jole High School in Sto. Domingo, NE, and then at Munoz Central School (Elementary level), where she retired shortly before joining her 4 children in America - Redo, Nel, Girtie and Jerry. She was indeed a woman of faith whose favorite verses in the Bible, reflecting her personality, were as follows: Matthew 6:33 (Seek ye first the kingdom of God. . .), Philippians 1:12 (. . .to live is Christ. . .), and Revelation 2:10 (about being steadfast in faith).

Nanay Lydia died in New York City last Dec. 10, 2011, and was flown to the Philippines where she wished to be buried. Her mother Church, MCC, honored her wake through series of necrological services, and buried at the family-owned cemetery in town, the Margaret Memorial park.

One of her closest niece, Sis. Glenda De Jesus-Romulo, gave during the requiem a comprehensive life history of Nanay Lydia, which will appear in the coming issue of SUNBEAM newsmagazine. (JSF reports)

CLSU Agronomist To Test Rice Varieties from Hubei Seeds Company

University professor-researcher Dr. Carlos Abon of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) agreed to test and evaluate five rice varieties from the China’s Hubei Provincial Seed Company under CLSU conditions. The sample Chinese rice varieties were part of the “exchange seeds” activity during the international seed technology course that this reporter and FAO consultant Dr. Rosendo Rapusas attended recently in Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan City (Province of Hubei). Testing shall be done at the experimental facilities of the Philippine-Sino Center for Agricultural Technology (PhilSCAT), a collaborative bilateral project between the governments of the Philippines and China.

Under PhilSCAT rice program, collaboration on hybrid rice is being done with the province of Hunan, specifically with the LongPing Hi-Tech Co. Ltd. However, varieties developed from other provinces are welcome for testing and evaluation at the University experimental station. As Dr. Abon puts it, the more the merrier.

PhilSCAT will formally resume its operations this January 2012, as the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has already approved over P13M Philippine counterpart budget for MOE of PhilSCAT. The Department of Agriculture, as PhilSCAT executing agency, shall release some P6M this yearend for the initial operations. PROC’s counterparts were in the form of facilities and equipment, secondment of about seven Chinese experts whose salaries and wages shall be taken care of by the Chinese government, and the special funds for selected activities of PhilSCAT like training (locally and in China) and the like. My Statesperson Idol Miriam Strikes Again!

Dec. 2011- Seldom that I blog political personalities, but let me do it this time, for my statesperson idol, Ms. Miriam D. Santiago. For a while, I thought she would fade away from the political limelights, as her enemies branded her "Brenda" (for brain damage) in a bid to put her down by professional rivals.

But now, Miriam strikes again, as she earned a new international recognition as reveled in the following (copied) release.

"Feisty Philippine Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has "overwhelmingly" won a seat in the highly powerful International Criminal Court, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Tuesday.

DFA said Santiago is the first woman from an Asian developing state to join as a judge in the Netherlands-based international court.

ICC is an "independent, permanent court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes," according to the court's website.

Santiago reportedly topped the poll's first round, effectively gaining a seat with 79 votes out of 104 valid votes, which DFA said was "an indication of the strong support from States Parties."

DFA noted that to be elected, candidates must receive two-thirds majority of the total number of votes cast, mostly States Parties voting.

"She was the first to be elected out of 18 candidates vying for six seats on the Court. For the first round of voting, she bested candidates from every region," DFA said in a statement.

"This is the message that we emphasized in the campaign. We are pleased that the international community has listened to us. Indeed, it is a new day for the Philippines, a day of pride for our country and a day of honor, knowing that this is a tremendous responsibility and mandate placed upon our compatriot," DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario said.

Santiago recently went on a four-month campaign to get States Parties' support.
In October, Santiago said she would be resigning from the Senate should she win a seat in the ICC.

“I’ll have to resign [as senator]. Isn’t that good news for my enemies? I would have to live in The Hague. I will look like a European and speak like a European and I will be as snooty as a European when I come back," she reportedly said. (30)

Is the movie The Last Temptation of Christ Sacreligious?

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST AND THE CHRISTOLOGY OF MARTIN SCORSESE

This controversial film was shown several years back, and I’ve heard a lot of criticisms about it both positive and negative. Controversial indeed, because the film tackled the sinful nature of humans, which as the book of Genesis recorded, came into being soon as sins entered humanity first through Adam and Eve. And this film earned the ire of select conservative Christians as the film director Martin Scorsese portrayed the Lord Jesus Christ in his “sinful” human nature while having romantic relationship with Maria Magdalena. May be still a taboo for many Christians, but to me, the film, though fictitious can be rated as “highly recommended for adult audience” as Scorsese gave his own interpretation of the adult human life of the God incarnate, Jesus Christ. Maybe, the director did this for both artistic and commercial purposes.

If Scorsese were an evangelist, three concerns may be detected in his “gospel”. First, that Jesus emphasized Love, the unconditional and indiscriminating love for thy neighbors, be they good or bad. Scorsese clearly portrayed how Jesus associated with the sinners and loved them. He indeed loved the sinners, not necessarily their sins. This was portrayed in the scene when Jesus was queuing along with other “customers” of the prostitute, but when his turn came, he did not do it. All have sinned, and when he said, “those among you who have no sin may cast the first stone”, only indicates how he cares for the sinful humanity. “To err is human, to forgive is divine”, as Alexander Pope puts it aptly described Scorsese’s “gospel”. Second, that spiritual salvation is a gift from God, and humanity can be saved only by grace. No man can be perfectly good to earn salvation. Only grace from God can save men. Even Jesus while in flesh seemed to struggle against sin. In this Scorsese’s film, this human nature of Jesus was portrayed right at the a crucifiction scene when he shouted, with full emotions, “Father, why thou have you forsaken me”. Jesus was then in flesh, and he can feel the pain and agony of being human. Scorsese further interpreted this by showing post-crucifiction scenes when Jesus as guided by an angel went down from the cross, go to the wilderness, got married and birth several children, as if he lived a normal human being. This could be the title of the movie in this reflection – The Last Temptation of Christ. He was supposed to be God-like, as the Father sent him – no complaint but with all willingness to die. And third concern, Jesus is the messiah. The entire film is essentially Bible-based. While Scorsese focused on the human nature of Jesus, the film ended with the Deity of Christ. Jesus accomplished his mission when he shouted, “it is accomplished!” right before he died. At the end of the film Jesus has the dialogue with the Father who seemed sorry for what Jesus did as human. The Father seemed to tell him that he must be more spiritual rather than being human while on earth, and that he must die as God and not as human. And while the Father seemed sorry for what Jesus struggled as human, the Father still expressed his unconditional love for his begotten son and forgave him. That finally happened when Jesus accepted and died “happily” on the cross. That event started human salvation for all those who believe him.

Fictional or Scriptural? One of the elements in the film which I may considered fictional was the thought or theme that Jesus fell into sin/s while he was here on earth. He may be tempted several times throughout his over 30 years on earth, but it is unscriptural to conclude that Jesus fell into sin. He remained sinless till he ascended back to heaven. He may have mingled with sinners like prostitutes, but he never ever prostituted himself. He may got angry with people who made the holy Temple a market place, but he did not sin. He did everything in love. He told and corrected one’s mistakes and sins with love. When he saved the prostitute (Magdalena?) from angry mob who were determined to stone her to death, that was a feeling of compassion to the sinners, yet, he told her, “Go and sin no more”, for he never tolerated sinful acts.
Another fictitious and unique portrayal by Scorsese was the “Jesus getting away from the cross”, who, upon the guide of an angel, went into the wilderness, and marry a bride who during her pregnant stage died. Then, he found another woman friend (Martha or Maria?) with whom he seemed to birth several children and lived a normal life as human. This could be another temptation in his life as God incarnate. Thus, at the end of the film when the Father confronted him, he was asked, “What are you doing with this woman and these children?”
The crucifiction scenes also received unique portrayal like the form of the cross he bore (it was unassembled cross) contrary to the traditional completely formed cross. The mountain where the crucifiction was done was likewise unique, so with the other criminals crucified with him. Jesus was crucified in total nudity. Physical arrangement was different from that we traditionally saw from other artists’ interpretation.
The dialogue between the ailing Jesus and the Father may also be considered fictitious, as Jesus, as well as the Father ascertained his felling into sins while here on earth. Jesus was then “struggling” to heavens showing the hell at the background.

Christological Theme. In this film, Jesus’ self-awareness was torn between his being the Son of God (the Messiah) and the son of Mary. During his ministry, he seemed to be what the Heavenly Father wanted him to be – preach, make miracles and lead humanity to God. He even once told Mary, his mother, that he didn’t know them, and that the Temple was his house as what his Heavenly Father planned for him. Yet, in some moments in his life, his being son of Mary prevailed, as what he was while hanging on the cross upon seeing his mother Mary and others at the scene.
On his trial and eventual crucifiction, he was both forsaken and charged by his fellow Jewish people for allegedly collaborating with the Roman empire, and for breaking the Laws such as working on Sabbath, and for preaching his being the messiah. Similarly, he was charged and eventually sentenced to death by crucifiction by the Roman empire for alleged sedition, enciting the Jewish people to rebellion.
In a nutshell, Scorsese’s Christological theme may be inferred from the following Plot of the story:
The film begins with a man whispering in despair, "The feeling begins. Very tender, very loving. Then the pain starts. Claws slip underneath the skin and tear their way up. Just before they reach my eyes, they dig in. And I remember. First I fasted for three months. I even whipped myself before I went to sleep. At first it worked. Then the pain came back. And the voices. They call me by the name: Jesus." Jesus of Nazareth (Willem Dafoe) is a carpenter in Roman-occupied Judea. He is torn between himself as a man and his knowledge that God has a plan for him. This conflict results in self loathing, and he collaborates to construct crosses used to crucify Jewish revolutionaries, an act that brands him a traitor in the eyes of his fellow Israelites.
Judas Iscariot (Harvey Keitel) belongs to a nationalistic splinter faction which wishes to revolt against Roman rule. Originally sent with orders to kill Jesus for being a collaborator, Judas instead comes to suspect that Jesus is actually the Messiah and asks him to lead a revolution against the Romans. Jesus tries to tell Judas that his message is love, that love of mankind is the highest virtue that God wants. Judas joins Jesus in his ministry, but warns Jesus that he will kill him if he strays from his obligations as a revolutionary. Jesus also has an undisclosed prior relationship with Mary Magdalene (Barbara Hershey), a Jewish prostitute. Mary asks Jesus to stay with her, a request that he considers seriously before deciding to leave for a monastic community. Jesus later saves Mary from an angry mob which has gathered to stone her for the crimes of prostitution and working on the sabbath. Jesus persuades them to spare her life—instructing "he who is without sin [to] cast the first stone"—and instead preaches to the crowd using many of the parables from the Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus soon acquires a following of disciples, but during this time he remains uncertain of his role and status as Messiah. He travels with his disciples to visit John the Baptist who has already heard of Jesus' reputation. John baptizes Jesus, and that night the two discuss their differing theologies and political views. John believes that one must first gain freedom from the Romans before the world of God is declared, while Jesus maintains that love is more important and people should tend to matters of the spirit. Jesus then resolves to go off into the desert to see if God really speaks to him. While in the desert, Jesus is tempted three times by Satan (Leo Marks). He resists each of these temptations and instead envisions himself with an axe chopping down an apple tree. Jesus then appears as a vision to his waiting disciples where he seems to rip out his own heart and invites them to follow him. With newfound courage as the Messiah, he proceeds to perform many signs and wonders such as restoring sight to a blind man, turning water into wine, and raising Lazarus (Tomas Arana) from the dead.
Eventually his ministry reaches Jerusalem. Jesus is outraged by the money changers in the temple and throws them out. He even leads a small army to try to retake the temple by force, but instead halts on the steps and begins bleeding from his hands. This convinces him that violence is not the right path and that he must die in order to bring salvation to mankind. Confiding in Judas, he asks his best friend and strongest disciple to turn him in to the Roman guards, something that Judas does not want to do. Nevertheless, Jesus implores that this is the only way and a weeping Judas acquiesces. Jesus convenes his disciples for Passover seder, an event which later comes to be known as the Last Supper. After the meal, Judas leads a contingent of soldiers to arrest Jesus while he is praying in the garden of Gethsemane, identifying him with a kiss. In the struggle to defend his master, Peter (Victor Argo) cuts off the ear of Malchus; however, Jesus performs the miracle of reattaching it and turns himself over to the soldiers' custody. Pontius Pilate (David Bowie) confronts Jesus and tells him that he must be put to death because he represents a threat against the status quo, that being the authority of the Roman Empire. Jesus is subsequently flogged and a crown of thorns is placed on his head. He then proceeds to Golgotha where he is crucified naked.
While on the cross, Jesus sees and talks to a young girl who claims to be his guardian angel. She tells him that he is neither the Son of God nor the Messiah, but that God loves him, is pleased with him, and wants him to be happy. She brings him down off the cross and leads him away while the jeering onlookers seem not to notice. The angel takes him to be with Mary Magdalene, and the newly married couple make love. They are soon expecting a child and living an idyllic life. One day, however, Mary abruptly dies in their home, and a sobbing Jesus is consoled by his angel who says that God has sent for her and that all women are "Mary", thus he takes both Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, for his wives. He starts a family with them, having many children, and lives his life in peace. Jesus is next seen as an older man who encounters the apostle Paul preaching about the Messiah—that is, about "Jesus"—and he tries to tell Paul that he is the man about whom Paul has been preaching. Paul (who in this film has slain the resurrected Lazarus in his earlier life as Saul) repudiates him, saying that even if Jesus hadn't died in the cross, his message was the truth, and nothing would stop him from proclaiming that. Jesus debates him, claiming that salvation cannot be founded on lies.
Nearing the end of his life, an elderly Jesus calls upon his former disciples to attend him at his deathbed. Peter, Nathaniel, and a scarred John all visit their master as Jerusalem is in the throes of rebellion. Judas comes last and denounces Jesus as a traitor. He reveals that the youthful angel who released Jesus from the crucifixion is in fact Satan who has been tempting him into this alternate life of comfort as a mortal man. Jesus at last understands and accepts that he must die to bring salvation to mankind. Crawling back through the burning city of Jerusalem, he reaches the site of his crucifixion and begs God to let him fulfill his purpose and to "let him be God's son."
Jesus instantly awakens from his reverie and finds himself once more on the cross, having overcome the "last temptation" of escaping death, being married and raising a family, and the ensuing disaster that would have consequently encompassed mankind. Naked and bloody, Jesus cries out in ecstasy as he dies, "It is accomplished!", and the screen flickers to white. (End)

16 ICCM Freshmen Complete Technical Writing Course

6 Dec. 2011, ICCM-Antipolo City. Sixteen freshmen students completed today the 3-unit course on English III (Technical Writing) as part of the second sem course offerings in this Bible college, the International Christian College of Manila. They are Chester Silagan, Ceferino Conching, Jr., Journey Lucino, Bernadeth Lino, Rosemarie Rodriguez, Sherlyn Tuliao, Ferlyn Sitones, Germel Panasigan, Rosenyl Fernandez, Sherwin Aldana, Krisbil Undaloc, Rheanon David Baysa, Don Donald Agresor, Jera Mae Bianes, Jierom Tibalbag and Michael Tobias. The 16 students took their final exams today to culminate the semi-block course which started four weeks ago with class schedule every Monday and Tuesday, to complete the 50-hour CHED requirement for the 3-unit course. All of them will receive grades based on four major criteria – Class participation (via seatwork-writing exercises and quizzes), mid-term, final exams and a term paper.

Base on this professor’s observations, the course seemed difficult to teach as well as hard to learn, as its course objectives cover both the cognitive (knowledge of technical writing) and the psychomotor (writing skills), and freshmen seem unprepared or lack general background required of the course. Thus, we need to adjust our learning methodologies and simplify the course objectives to make it more realistic and attainable. In other universities, just like this professor’s alma mater (UP), scientific writing is offered for thesis students who are generally on their senior year. Nonetheless, with all those adjustments and modifications, these 16 students hoped to have acquired the technical writing know-how as indicated in its syllabus. (JSF reports)

Reflections on Vigan Tri-sectoral Convention of the churches of Christ, Nov. 2011 (focus on KKK Mega-Fellowship)

As far as I know, this is the 3rd time that the Churches of Christ in the Philippines hold a simultaneous fora (convention-fellowship) for Christian men’s, women’s and youth sectors in the same place. As in the first 2 fora, and while these were held simultaneously, programming (including themes, topics, speakers, etc.) was done independently in its entirety. In fact, I haven’t gone nor seen the Youth’s venue as it was usually far and somehow inaccessible (from the men’s and women’s venues). Hence, I could not reflect well on how the youth sector fare in that Convention; the same for Women’s group.

Of the three fora, it was the Women’s group which is best organized and best attended. Their annual attendance does not fall below 500. Men’s group seems the least attended as this year’s attendance was only little over a hundred. There were even Men’s participating and/or observing at the Women’s group, and need to be fetched and drawn to the Men’s group.

At Men’s group, it can be observed the absence or lack of male Church leaders from the national leadership of the Churches of Christ. While some CACD officers were sighted in Vigan fellowship of men, the organization and the running of the fellowship program was handled by the KKK and not CACD.

I think there’s a need to revisit the holding of two national fora, the CACD’s Church leaders’ convention and the KKK’s national mega-fellowship, as both were dominated by males. Are they really mere duplication? Is there a need to just integrate them into one forum? Or, just let it be, afterall, there’s nothing wrong duplicating a good evangelistic and spiritually enriching programs? As they say, the more (fellowships), the merrier.

The speakers at the KKK mega-fellowships were no doubt effective Church leaders in their own rights. Included as plenary speakers were evangelists Mel Maldupana, Jerry Felipe, Edwin Lopez of Cebu and this reporter (Josue S. Falla). Other prominent names in the brotherhood (like Ruben Grande, Papa Chav, Noel Deocareza, and others) spoke at the small group sessions. They were all exemplary speakers, only that most of them, including those in the plenary, have that style which I think obsolete – that is there speeches seem adversarial in nature. In laymen’s lingo, they are still patama, atake and person-oriented, rather than message-oriented. And I think it was understandable because that is what the audience seemed like to hear. I am looking forward to messages which are professional in nature, less pang-aatake or paninira to other ministries (my opinion only). I look forward to working with evangelists who are more mature professionally and with good tacts.

I have nothing against offertory especially if it is well-prepared. The day-long KKK mega-fellowship has three times offertory, and it was really challenging to the genuine givers who, as long as there’s money in their wallet, are self-obliged to give. It was good in the KKK that the frequency of offertory was pre-announced, so that givers could budget the money in their pockets appropriately.

The host of the KKK mega-fellowship was excellent, congratulations to the Philippine Bible Seminary (PBS) headed by Bro. Dan Roca. PBS facilities were more than enough for the group. The head of the secretariat, Sis. Mona Mallari is likewise very efficient support staff. KKK chorale composed of young boys from Laguna also deserved applause for their job well-done. And lead facilitator Bro. Rizaldy Franco should be commended too, all for their jobs well-done.

Overall, this national fellowship of Christian men is highly commendable. More campaign should be done to increase its attendance to be really called as a mega-fellowship. Reasons for low attendance must be addressed, and general support from all local Churches must be solicited and enjoined. (JSF reflects)

ICCM Recognizes Anew Top of the Class and Cream of the Crop

16 Nov. 2011, ICCM Chapel, Antipolo City - Recognition is a universal needs. And for the preceeding semester, ICCM students who topped their respective classes or subjects were honored anew by the College's administration. Similarly, those who made it to the Dean's and President's lists, whom they call the "cut above the rest", were recognized in a simple ceremony in this campus. Each awardee received their certificate of recognition and a modest food check at the ICCM canteen.

It can be seen from the faces of the selected bright students their pleasure and happiness for this modest motivation strategy. Jokingly, some even kiss or wipe with their hankies the statue of the Holy Family in the "Belen" Christmas decor in a corner of the chapel (as some kind of mockery of the traditions of some devotees?).

It can be observed the increase of President's listers this time to around ten than the last semester's around five only, where this reporter also had the opportunity to attend the ceremony. It is a good indicator that the strategy really works. Dean's and president's listers were those who got a weighted average of 90% and 91 above, respectively. Other guest during the ceremony was Bro. Ernie Sta. Ana, ICCM-BOT Vice-Chair.

Post-Wuhan Training Nostalgia

I'd been attending international trainings, and it is always good to win new friends and acquaintances. My recently finished international course is another life-time experience worth-keeping. Just as in other courses I attended, one of the most difficult moment in this course was when everybody started to pack-up things and go back home. It is here when you get mixed feeling - sad as your group start to disintegrate, but exciting as you hope to see your family back home.

Nov. 11 when I together with a compatriot Dr. Sen and Mr. Amour of Kenya left Wuhan and took a 13-hour travel by train to Guangzhou. The trip was convenient as we took "sleeper" accommodation when one can just lie down on to his destination. We reach Guangzhou early morning, but our flight was on the evening yet, thus, we have to wait for another day before boarding our plane to Manila.

I reached my residence Nov. 12 in the afternoon, started checking my e-mails a day after, and the words of greetings from our classmates certainly made me nostalgic. So nice experience, so nice Wuhan City. I simply love it. Ni hao . . . saijan!

STCC Observes Thanksgiving Sunday as 6 Souls receive Baptism

13 November 2011, Sto. Tomas, San Jose City (Nueva Ecija). The Sto.Tomas Church of Christ celebrates today a Thanksgiving Day with the usual Sunday worship at the CLSU Interfaith Chapel, where six souls accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and received holy baptism. As it is 2nd Sunday of the month, the guest speakers were the Team of 3 young Church workers from Munoz Church as being discipled by Bro. Roger Miguel, with STCC as some kind of training field.

After the worship service, the congregation proceeded to its pastorate at Brgy. Sto. Tomas in the residence of this Church elder, where the water immersion took place using a small plastic pool as the baptistry. Praise and worship follows with a series of thanksgiving prayers. Activity ends with a simple merienda fellowship.

The occasion also served as bienvenida for this blogger, who has just arrived from a 3-week sojourn to the People's Republic of China. All praises be to the Father.(30)

A total of 30 Omegans and 2 guest brethren-awardees were honored today as the Gamma Epsilon International UPLB Omega Chapter celebrates its 45th founding anniversary. The awarding, as lead by Dr. Manny Regalado (PhilRice Executive Director) and Dr. Malou R. Soliven (current Central Mindanao University president), coincides with the traditional celebration of UPLB Loyalty Day 2011, where alumni and guests of this state university pay their annual tributes to the beloved alma mater. The following paragraphs constitute the report of the GEI awards committee chaired by this blogger.

This year’s grand homecoming of the Gamma Epsilon Fraternity and the Gamma Lambda Epsilon Sorority (UPLB Omega Chapter and Alumni Council) is one of the rare opportunities for us to meet each other while giving due recognition to selected brethren who have done outstanding deeds to this organization, as well as those who achieved the highest formal degree by the academe, our bonafide residence.

This significant reunion coincides with the 45th founding anniversary of this Chapter (Sept. 8, 1966), and the traditional UPLB Loyalty Day (October 10) for our beloved Alma Mater; indeed a double-whammy for us fellow Omegans to be with our alma mater.

PhilSCAT II Opens in November 2011

21 September 2011, PhilSCAT Headquarters, CLSU, Nueva Ecija - A 7-man delegation from the neighboring country of People's Republic of China (PROC) is in town to sign a document for the final resumption of operations of the Philippine-Sino Center for Agricultural Technology (PhilSCAT). The mission is headed by Yuanxiang Fang (chief engineer of the unit representing the Chinese government) with the following members: Xuequan Mao, Cheng Liangji (Chinese director of PhilSCAT I), Yongxing Li (Biogas technology expert), Hehua Tu, Ke Zhang (English interpreter) and Qiu Zhijun, First Secretary of Chinese Embassy Manila. They are here to discuss and eventually sign the so-called Minutes of Technical Discussion on PhilSCAT-II, which proposed implementation is in November this year.

On the Philippine side, the Mission is received by the Department of Agriculture represented by Philippine rice czar Dr. Santiago R. Obien, Director Zeny Villegas of PMS and representatives of partner agencies like PhilRice, DA-RFO III, PhilMech and PhilRice. The Central Luzon State University which is the lead implementing agency of this bilateral program was represented in this forum by its VP for Administration Dr. Raul Divina, PhilSCAT director himself Dr. Emmanuel Sicat, Dr. Carlos Abon, Jr. and other officials of the university.

The joint Filipino and Chinese delegates discussed the detailed components of the Phase 2, which basically includes research and commercialization of hybrid rice technology, rice mechanization and biogas technologies.

Unlike its Phase I program (which Chinese executing unit was Ministry of Agriculture, Foreign Economic Cooperation Center (MOA-FECC), PhilSCAT II will be executed by the Ministry of Commerce, with Yuan Longping High Tech Agriculture Co., Limited (Longping) as the lead implementor. On the part of the Philippine government, the same arrangement as Phase I shall be followed, that is the DA as the executing agency with CLSU as lead implementor together with PhilRice, PHilMech, ATI and DA-Regional Field Office III as members.

PhilSCAT is a bilateral program between the Philippines and the People's Republic of China on Agriculture and related fields, which initially covered hybrid rice and agri-mechanization technologies R and D. STCC Has Regular Guest Ministers of the Word

The Sto. Tomas Church of Christ (STCC) has currently no full-time minister, but have regular Sunday sermon speaker, as arranged with the cooperating local Churches and individual brethren.

On the first Sunday of the month, the Cluster 5 Churches' management scheduled the guest speaker, who is also a minister from the Cluster member Churches of San Jose City, Maligaya, Malayantoc, Bakal 3 or San Francisco.

On the second Sunday, Munoz Church, care of Bro. Roger Miguel's team of disciples are the resource persons, who would give and provide the Communion reflection, Offertory challenge and the message. This arrangement is also part of MCC's discipleship training with STCC as the training ground.

Our third Sunday regular speaker is a roving minister of Nueva Ecija who has just relocated from Isabela. He is Pastor Romeo Sumaway, a graduate of Aparri Bible Seminary.

The last Sunday of the month is a Youth Sunday where the youth sector takes charge of the Sunday worship program including the identification of guest speaker. Invited speakers are usually the junior ministers in the vicinity. Previous invitees include Bro. Ariel Vergara, Bro. Dennis Gabato, and Bro. Migs Nad, Jr. to name a few.

STCC elders Bros. Josue Falla, Rod Nonog and Mario Salazar are on the watch, and ready to pitch-in, in case of "emergency".

STCC holds the regular Sunday worship celebration at the CLSU Interfaith Chapel inside the beautiful campus of this state univesity of Central Luzon, with time slot of 7:30 to 9:30 AM. GE International UPLB Omega Chapter and Alumni Council Jointly Celebrate 45th Founding Anniversary

10 Sept. 2011, UP at Los Banos, Laguna. Afternoon business meeting as presided by interim alumni council chair Bro. Gil Villancio . . . , and a whole night fellowship characterized this year's celebration of the Gamma Epsilon International 45th founding anniversary.

In the business meeting, everything about GEI October 9-Grand Homecoming was finalized, so do with the Frat/Soro participation to the traditional Oct. 10-Loyalty day parade.

Merry-making part of the 45th anniversary was done in the evening fellowship at a private resort in Pansol, Calamba, Laguna where recollections of the good old days, laughter and tears (of happiness, perhaps) abound. Bountiful foods were shared via potluck, so do with drinks both for young, old, ladies and gents alike. No vacant moment for the mike of videoke, as everybody wanted to grab the sound system to sing their favorite pieces, regardless of voice or singing quality. Some just spend sometime dipping themselves in the warm water spring in the pool, while others just enjoyed taking pictures here and there.

John Gilmore Visits ICCM

30 August 2011, ICCM Campus, Antipolo City - Australian missionary Bro. John Gilmore is in town with his base station at the International Christian College of Manila, this city. But who is Bro. J. Gilmore?

John Gilmore is the director of Australia's GMP (Global Mission Partners), a group which formally representing the Churches of Christ Overseas Missions. These are the COCOA (Church of Christ of Australia) people who have provided typhoon relief during past calamities here in the Philippines.

In these photos, Bro. John is received by ICCM officials, after which the group discussed possible collaborative undertakings between GMP and ICCM. During the meeting, John asked for the priority problems and concerns of the Bible college, where GMP may be of assistance. Some concerns raised include ownership of ICCM facilities, sustainability of the Bible college, continuous faculty training and development, masteral course offerings, expansion of enrollment and strengthening local Church supporting the seminaries, among many others. John also mentioned some GMP ministry interventions such as Church development support and Churchmen's (human) education and development as they did or are doing in nine more developing (poor) countries like Vanuatu, and some countries in Africa.

ICCM, just like other nine Philippines' Bible colleges and seminaries under Stone-Campbell restoration Movement, is currently suffering from financial difficulty resulting from the economic recession in America where many donors are. This "crisis" prompted the College constituents to be more aggressive in sourcing-out funding from the local donors (Filipino Fund) in order to keep this Christian education ministry going. (JSF)

Why I Keep on Coming Back to Masaguisi? Let these Pics Answer

On August 17 - 24, I visited my hometown Masaguisi, this time as sort of self-reward after completing my semi-block courses at ICCM, which I'd been teaching since June to August 16. I guessed I need the much-needed break so off to my roots I go right after finishing my class.

Going back to where you were born is really an exciting experience, much more in the cozy village of Masaguisi where I need to cross the Batangas-Mindoro straight down south of Or. Mindoro.

Who can miss the serenity of Masaguisi sea, with it's newly installed sea-wall a la Manila Baywalk, cross the river bank to see more beautiful scenes including the new community project called Bongabong Fish Sanctuary, hoping to develop more the fish and other marine products in the vicinity? And take a sip of fresh young coco-water (buko)so refreshing.

How can I miss meeting here and there childhood friends and classmates? This time we had a mini-reunion with childhood friends like Mila Isler, Olive Fernandez-Manete, Helna Hernandez-Escarilla, and Mona Fernandez, high school fellow alumnus after a briefing about the status of Masaguisi development. Notably, we were briefed about the Barangay Council project called Masaguisi Aqua Park, which aim is to revive that famous Masaguisi river which is now dying due to environmental abuse. Posted herewith is its perspective view, and all lovers of nature and environment are welcome to support this project.

The Masaguisi Elementary School located just at the back of our ancestral house becomes more than an educational institution, as mini-parks, reading area, sports area were continuously developed for the studying pleasure of Masaguisi pupils and out-of-school alike. It becomes a perfect place for a morning walk or jogging, another motivation for us to preserve and improve our ancestral house, as if the elementary school is but an extension of our residence.

That's Masaguisi now . . . always keeping pace with the development of other similar barangay, or even faster - just one good reason why I keep on coming back to my homeplace. (JSF)

Teaching Assignment@ICCM Ends Today

16 Aug. 2011, ICCM - Antipolo City. This reporter's teaching assignment this semester at the International Christian College of Manila (ICCM) culminates today as the 32 students under English II (Speech Communication) and 28 under Philippine History took their final exams to wrap-up the two courses. Both subjects completed the 50-hour requirement for CHED-required general education courses, offered through semi-block schedule from June through August 2011.

For Philippine History, the course culminated through a group report (Class was divided into 5 groups) on "P-H Timeline", a summary of important events in this country since time immemorial up to present. Selected film clips on Philippine History were likewise shown in an attempt to clearly visualize our pasts. Similarly for English 2, selected film clips produced by selected professors of Public Speaking were shown to the class in a bid to pin-down the important tips in public speaking.

Posted here are the official class pictures for both courses, taken shortly after the final exams. Thus, the smiles you can see there are not voluntary as the students can hardly smile after the tough final evaluation tests. GEI Bro. Josh Speaks at CLSU Pi Chapter Seminar on Leadership and Organizational Management

13 August 2011, CLSU College of Arts and Sciences. Gamma Epsilon International (GEI) alumnus from UPLB Omega Chapter, Dr. Josue S. Falla spoke today at the Pi Chapter-organized Leadership and Organizational Management Seminar held in Rm. 226 CLSU-CAS Annex building of the University. His assigned topic was "Moral and Spiritual Development", where he discussed a "Success Model" for total human development focused on the moral and spiritual aspects of life. This topic complemented three other more: 1. Basic Leadership and Management Style (Dr. Renato G. Reyes), 2. Communication Writing and the New GEI-Pi Chapter Constitution and By-Laws (Bro. Michael C. Delos Santos), and 3. Recruitment Process (Bro. Michael C. Mabalay).

In his discussion, Dr. J. Falla presented five human virtues he considered essential for successful living. These are Positive Thoughts, Genuine Joy, Healthy Lifestyle, Think Wealthy and The Unconditional (Agape) Love. He slanted the presentation from the Christian perspective, although there is one Muslim sister in attendance.

According to the current Grand Archon Bro. Benhur L. Basilio, this session is only the start of a continuing education for GEI as one constituent of the CLSU community. It was opined, however, that the succeeding sessions be opened to other allied organizations in the campus, as moral and spiritual development is a continuing societal concern. (JSF)

8 PHilMech Researchers Get Extra Retirement Benefits Under DOST Magna Carta for Scientists

PHilMech Headquarters, Munoz, Nueva Ecija - Eight senior researchers of the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech) earned additional retirement benefits as provided for in the Dept. of Science and Technology's Magna Carta for Scientists and Researchers (RA 3489). They are Rosendo Rapusas, Gloria Jimenez, Josue Falla, Ruben Manalabe, Raquel Bermundo, Hugo Tolentino, Glory Sabio and Rowena Gutierrez.

The extra benefits were due to the automatic increment of one salary grade level upon retirement. Director II with salary grade of 26 were upgraded to salary grade 27, in which the latest salary grade became the basis of computing the retirement benefits. Thus, the eight retired researchers get such benefits from both their mother unit (PHilMech) and the GSIS, a double-whammy indeed for the deserving government employees.

KKK Seminar Series for Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija

23 July 2011, Gen. Ricarte Church of Christ, Llanera, Nueva Ecija. The 3rd of a series of seminars on Church development being conducted by KKK was held today in this local Church. This time, the seminar zeroed-in on the "pre-destination of the church of Christ unto heavens" and on the principles of Church growth as well. The speakers were Bro. Jerry Felipe and Bro. Ruben Grande, both KKK top officials. Local coordination was assigned to this reporter, Bro. Josue S. Falla.

Bro. Jerry reviewed the topic during the first seminar about historical development of the New Testament church of Christ and its apostacy (or turning away from the genuine institution established sometime in 33AD in Jerusalem). He expounded on the qualities of the genuine Church focused on its being pre-destined to salvation.

Meanwhile, Bro. Ruben Grande discussed the Church growth as experienced by early churches recorded in the book of Acts. He classified the types of Church growth into Internal, Expansion and Extension types, and the different ways of church growth such as biological, transfer, and conversion growth. Focus of his discussion was on the seven principles of Church growth such as: 1. Prayer or Spiritual Warfare, 2. Clear and Unique Vision, 3. Leadership, 4. Strategic Planning, 5. Life development Groups, 6. Follow-up, and 7. Discipleship.

KKK is the short for Kapisanang Pangkalahatan ng Kalalakihang Kristiano ng mga Iglesia ni Kristo, a national para-Chruch organization of Christian men under the Stone-Campbell restoration movement. Its current president is Bro. J. Felipe himself. The seminar series for Nueva Ecija is being coordinated by the Christian Education committee of the CCNE (Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija) chaired by this reporter. The 3rd of the series was hosted by Ricarte Church led by an elder Bro. Joseph Peneyra, which sponsored food and accommodation of the participants, guests and speakers. (JSF reports)

"Farewell Tia Vacion Bariata and Ate Belen Santiago"

20 July 2011, Masaguisi, Bongabong, Or. Mindoro. Right after my classes at ICCM on July 18 and 19, I proceeded to this homevillage in Mindoro to pay tributes to two of my beloved ones - Salvacion S. Bariata and Evelyn M. Santiago, who both died on July 14 and 17, respectively. The two are very close to my heart, they being my dearest niece-cousin and aunt, respectively.

Salvacion Santiago-Bariata, or Tia Vacion as I fondly called her, is a public figure not only in Masaguisi but also in the entire Philippine churches of Christ, especially among the "Dorcas", the association of Christian women under the Churches of Christ/Christian Churches in the country. She is the better-half of renowned Filipino evangelist Artemio Bariata. She died at 84 leaving behind three grown-up children Raquel, Dina and Artemio, Jr. and six grandchildren.

Tia Vacion is an epitome of a typical wife of a pastor - soft-spoken, always-ready-to-help-others, devoted Church worker, healer-therapist - a talent which the Lord gave her to enrich her ministry, educator and a perfect mother. During her younger years, Tia Vacion was a good horseback-rider, having travelled to and fro Orconuma and Masaguisi due to her work assignment then as school teacher. On a personal level, I've known Tia Vacion as a very loving and fair aunt. She did not play favorites to us, her nephews, nieces and even children. For instance, if I had misunderstanding or quarrel with my cousins Rachel, Dina or Toto, she exercised impartiality in decision-making, meaning if her children erred, they will receive due punishment. I can vividly remember the parting words of Tia Vacion (together with my Fourth Year High School teacher then Mrs. Entera) when I left Masaguisi in 1971 to study in UP Los Banos. Those words of encouragement served as my inspirations to complete my degree in that state university. Indeed, she is an aunt worthy to emulate.

Meanwhile, another beloved relative who passed away was Evelyn Mapacpac-Santiago, who is both a "niece and a cousin". Belen, as I fondly called her, which later became Ate Belen, is a niece by my father's side, having her mother Manang Mina as my cousin. She was married to another cousin by my mother's side Manong Yoyong Santiago. Thus, by consanguinity Belen is junior niece by blood, but by affinity, she is senior to me, thus I have to address her Ate (by local tradition). Having grown in Masaguisi, until later on their family migrated to Orconuma, I have many fond memories with Ate Belen. She was sociable and very friendly. She has a genuine concern for her fellows. She served her community as barangay kagawad and social worker, thus, the entire Brgy. Orconuma gave official tributes to her before she was finally laid to rest in Bongabong Memorial Park.

I was able to join in the interment ceremony of Ate Belen on Thursday, July 21. For Tia Vacion, I had the opportunity to join two-night vigil on Wednesday and Thursday before she was laid to rest on Saturday, June 23, 2011.

To the two beloved ones, have a peaceful and glorious reunion with our Creator. We will certainly see you there sometime, somehow. All praises be to our Creator. (JSF Blogs)

Two Classes @ ICCM are now both Half-Through

12 July 2011, Antipolo City, MM. My teaching assignment at the International Christian College of Manila is now half-completed, as we are set to have our mid-term exams on Monday. On a semi-block course arrangement, I am currently teaching two subjects, the Philippine History and English 2 (Speech Communication), both 3-unit courses required by CHED. I've got 32 students in English 2 and 28 in Phil. History. We are expected to finish both courses by the first week of August 2011.

Pending the opening of PhilSCAT - II, where I am expected to work (after retirement from PHilMech last year), I may spend vacant weeks (after my ICCM classes) in our Farms in Mindoro and enjoy the much-deserved break in my hometown Masaguisi. (JSF)

First CLSU Pi Alumni Reunion: Just Another Bonding Moments With Another Select GEI Brethren

For me, the occasion is just another bonding moments with GE/GLE brethren, as ever since I came to CLSU in 1976, I'd been following the status and developments of the GE chapter in this University. Yet, this occasion, the first ever (?, may be not)reunion?) of GE Pi Chapter alumni is considered historical by some brethren. The truth is, as whisphered to me by GE senior adviser Bro. Marcial Estolano, "how about those previous attempts by Bros. Reyson Raynmundo, Mike de Guzman Raymundo and Mike Mabalay to organize alumni council?".

Anyway, those are just side comments, and we have no bad intension whatsoever of derailing this another attempt to unify GE/GLE@Central Luzon State University alumni and residents alike.

Hence, here's congratulating our new sets of officers of CLSU alumni council, namely, Bros. Gerry Pascua, Charlie Corpuz, Tony Antalan, Froy Reganit, Romy Labios and many more (sorry for not mentioning their names, National Council will report them all completely shortly). Philippine Cotton Staff To Converge in Las Vegas

“Former employees of Philippine Cotton Corporation will be holding a reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada from October 21-23, 2011.” This was announced by Jess Gomez who is coordinating the event. Gomez served as Area Manager for Region I covering the Ilocos sphere of the Corporation before he managed the Alacan, Pangasinan Area.

“This is going to be exciting,” remarks Rudy D. Liporada. “Former co-employees gathering from all over the world to share our past endeavor serving farmers in the Philippines in the cotton cash crop business.” Liporada served as Finance and Administrative Manager for the Tarlac Office in Area II.

“Former Technical Division Chief Johnny Capuyan will be our guest speaker during the program,” adds Gomez. “Ben Fonbuena is coordinating those coming from other countries like Canada and Australia while Rosalina Falla is our coordinator for those coming from the Philippines.”

The Philippine Cotton Corporation was a quasi-government company until it was absorbed with the Cotton Research & Development Institute into the Cotton Development Administration (CODA) on February 11, 1998 by virtue of Republic Act
8486.

CODA is the sole agency of the government tasked to undertake initiatives that will spur the growth of the local cotton industry through cotton research, development and extension. As an agency, CODA is attached to the Philippines' agriculture department, but fully autonomous in terms of its organization and management.

My Facebook Account Floods with Birthday Greetings

4 July 2011, Home@San Jose City, Nueva Ecija. Today's cybertech really made everything easy, as my Facebook account is flooded with greetings from well-wishers here and abroad for my 57th birthday. Similarly, my mobilephone, which is now hooked-up with pc, kept on ringing a day before my actual birthdate on July 4 until evening of such Monday.

My 57th birthday is one of the simpliest celebration ever, and perhaps the least costly. It started on Sunday worship celebration at STCC, where I serve as one of the two elders. This Sunday is memorable as the congregation added another elder, Bro. Mario Salazar, who was also ordained by the Church officers on the same morning service. This brings to three the number of elders at STCC, I, Bro. Rod Nonog and Bro. Mario Salazar.

On my birthday proper, wife Rose prepared pancit as shared together with a few neighbors around as late breakfast. I received calls and SMS from my children abroad (Japan and California). And finally, we had simple dinner with our parents, Mr./Mrs. Calixto Bulacso and son Ian's family, at the nearby mall NE Pacific-San Jose, just a few minute-drive away from our residence. My 57th Birthday Plan

This 2011, my birthday falls on a Monday (July 4), a regular working, school day, thus, I'm anticipating for a simple celebration such as inclusion in the Prayer Requests' list for STCC Sunday worship. And on Monday, perhaps, wife Rose can prepare sphagetti or pancit and something to drink, for my well-wishers. No invitation whatsoever for my 57th birthday, but walk-in guests shall be warmly welcome and be entertained.

When I was a kid, I remember, my mom cooked a caldero of porridge (lugaw or tutong) for my friends around without them knowing it was my birthday. (30)

ICCM Admin Recognizes Top Students

28 June 2011, ICCM Chapel. Select students of the International Christian College of Manila (ICCM) who excelled academically were recognized today in a simple Recognition program, by the College administration led by Dean Ross Wissmann, President Arthur Santiago and BOT Chair Dr. Josue Falla. The ceremony was honored too with the presence of a visiting professor from Johnson Bible College (JBC) in Tennessee, USA Ms. Susan Calderon.

Each of the top (one) student per subject during the preceeding semester was recognized through a simple certificate of recognition and gift certificates from the ICCM sari-sari store. Two prestigious categories were likewise honored - they are those who made it in the Academic List and the President's List.

Those who made it in the President's List were Velinda Montellana, Aileen Vargas, Mark Garcia and Francis Tagulao.

ICCM with campus in Antipolo City, is a boarding co-educational bible seminary of the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement. It was established in 2001. In 2005, the College received accreditation from the Philippine Commission of Higher Education (CHED) offering Bachelor of Theology, with four majors (Education, Worship, Ministry and Outreach). Currently, ICCM has 104 students coming from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. (JSF reports)

Same Sex Marriage Revisited

The issue of homosexuality (gays, lesbians, transgender, et. al), is as old as Sodom and Gomorra, and as controversial as many issues of the times. The recent news about the union of eight homosexual couples in Baguio City really rocked the boat, the Church in particular. Its recent legalization in the world’s leading civilization, New York City, is another blow to Christianity.

In Vol. I, No. 6 issue of SUNBEAM, this writer noted same-sex marriage in Canada, the 3rd country which legalized same sex marriage after Belgium and Netherlands. The punchline then in my column, “From the Grapevine”, another Sodom and Gomorra in the making?

Are nations which accepted same-sex marriage doomed to destruction as God did to Sodom and Gomorra?

According to my psychometric professor in UP, masculine/feminine behavior can be better viewed as a continuum rather than a dichotomy. An array of behaviors branded by society as masculine or feminine, can be found in any individual regardless of gender, at the varying degree. For example, powdering one’s face is branded as feminine behavior, and yet we can see many “macho” men powdered their faces. Thus, effeminate behavior should not always be equated to being gay (male homosexual).

One artist interpreted Jesus Christ as gay upon observing him to be leaning on John’s shoulder during the Last Supper. And certainly, the Saviour is not homosexual. Therefore, outside manifestation of one’s behavior should not be equated to homosexuality. But the question is, when does one (gay or lesbian) become homosexual?

The Bible teaches us to love homosexuals, but not their homosexual acts. Same sex marriage definitely leads to homosexual acts. Thus, the Bible, using simple logic, prohibits same sex marriage.

Bro. Dave, the SUNBEAMer in Baguio called me up, telling me that the case of Baguio same sex marriages is more intricate than what we only heard. It includes marriage of gay male and lesbian female, and so, technically and physiologically, they are still male and female, and thus exempted from the definition of same-sex marriage. What’s my opinion?, he asked.

Let me stick to the Bible standard-teaching, love the homosexuals but not their homosexual acts. I think the issue at hand, in my opinion, is not on legality nor technicality of the matter. It is more of a Christian morality issue. Sex within marriage is God’s plan for mankind. I cannot equate being gay or lesbian to homosexual immorality, not until he or she practices homosexual acts. Thus, sex within marriage of a gay and a lesbian is acceptable (at least to this SUNBEAM editor). (JSF)

NSO Conducts Seminar for CCNE @ Synchronized Men's and Women's Fellowships

25 June 2011, Abar 1st Elementary School, Nueva Ecija. A four-member team from the provincial NSO (National Statistic Office) branch in Nueva Ecija conducted a day-long seminar on Solemnizing Marriage. Led by its Provincial Statistics Officer Mrs. Elizabeth Rayo, the team of resource persons discussed, among others, the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) governing the registration of the authority to solemnize marriage with Church leaders and other designated authorities. The resource persons zeroed-in their talks on the Family Code and the definition of marriage. They emphasized the three basic requirements for solemnizing marriage such as (1) valid marriage license issued by the local civil registrar, (2) the authorized solemnizing officer as licensed by the Civil Registrar General, and (3) the appropriate marriage ceremony. Details of these requirements were discussed.

The CCNE, Inc. (Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija) has so far, nine NSO-authorized solemnizng officers. They are Roger Miguel, Bernard Dayag, Josue Falla, Miguel Nad, Jr., Noel Hermoso, Ryan Sombrito, Ernani Canoy, Bartolome bernardo, Jr. and Noel Alfonso. There were 25 attendees in today's seminar, many of them are yet to apply for CRASM (Certificate of Registration for Authority to Solemnize Marriage).

Meanwhile, close to 80 Christian women of Nueva Ecija converge in this school for their quarterly provincial fellowship. One activity of the day was the election of officers (of the SPKK-NE) for July 2011 to 2013 (or 2 years term), where Lani Juliano of Maligaya CoC was elected as president, and Imelda Salazar (STCC) and Nanette Arandilla (Munoz CoC) as vice-presidents. 11 Fathers Honor on Fathers' Day 2011

19 June 2011, STCC, CLSU Campus, Nueva Ecija - Eleven fathers who are regular members of Sto. Tomas Church of Christ (STCC) were honored today in celebration of this year's Fathers' Day. The honorees are Bros. Mario Salazar (Elder), Enrico Sagun (Deacon), Ramon Caibio, Sr. (Deacon), Josue Falla (Elder-Minister), Rodrigo Nonog (Elder), Rodolfo Torres (Deacon), Nick Flores (Deacon), Jose Pantanilla (Deacon), and father-leaders Bros. Joshue Ian B. Falla, Ramon "Jojo" Caibio, Jr. and Rosmel Baluran. They were awarded a plaque containing the poem "To Be a Man" and a recognition statement by the STCC administration.

In his Fathers' Day message, this reporter shared the Psalms 23 (The Lord is My Shepherd), emphasizing the role of every father as the shepherd of his own household. Each representative of the households, either wife or children, gave response expressing tributes to the fathers. They received special benediction from an elder of the church.

Celebration was capped through a simple merienda after the worship service, where selected families brought something to eat and drink (on a "Pot-Luck" system).

Meanwhile, as an extended celebration of this event, son and now a father too, Bro. Ian, treated our family to a mall in SM-Rosales (Pangasinan) enjoying the foods in a pizzahouse and the kiddie rides for our grandcildren. All praises be to the Father in heaven. (JSF Blogs)

Coping-up with Changes in the Family

"Nothing in this world is permanent except change". This is the reality that everyone has to contend with, our family is not an exception.

Comes July 30, 2011, wife Rose will fly to San Francisco, California to migrate and join daughter Danna-Rose, who opted to live in that part of the globe. She will try life in the West, upon the petition of our Americanized citizens Dominic and Cristina, who are with the US Navy currently assigned in Atsugi NAF, Japan.

I could not join them in the USA at the moment for many unfinished local commitments. I think I need to wait until 2014 soon as I get my monthly pension, which is issued to government retirees at age 60.

Yet, no regrets afterall. We live in the age and generation where the entire globe may be considered as a small global village. Distance was now conquered by cybertechnology - texting, chat and similar communication wonders can very well close the physical gaps.

Posted photo here along with our immediate family is Ron and Dory Graham, who were really instrumental in getting members of my family in the USA.

For my family members out there on the other side of the globe, "have you taken your meals, or have you taken your medicines?" - reminders as if we are still living in one roof. Take care. . . Dad Josh here!

668 Registered Delegates in the 4th National Church Leaders' Convention; Sulit, Santiago Top CACD Election

11 June 2011, Teachers' Camp, Baguio City. As in the first three national conventions of Church leaders, the 4th forum was participated by 668 registered delegates, as reported today by the CACD Chair Bro. Ernie Sta. Ana. Actual count, however, exceeded the official count as many local brethren (from Baguio City)just sat-in for fellowship or as observers.

The Convention went-on smoothly as planned. The three main Exposition speakers were Bro. Ross Wissmann (ICCM Academic Dean), Bro. Leonardo Salvador (MBS Professor) and Bro. Arhur Santiago (ICCM President). Other speakers include Bro. Erap Sison, Bro. Juan Bautista and Bro. Mel Maldupana.

This SUNBEAM editor-reporter's assignments in the Convention include the introduction of the speaker (Ross Wissmann) and as facilitator in one Break-up session on Leadership and Mutual Submission workshop. He also supervised the distribution of the new issue of SUNBEAM Christian newsmagazine were over 100 copies only were sold during the Convention.

Re-launching of Sulo-ng-Kristiano, an older sister magazine of SUNBEAM formed too as the highlight of the Convention, as well the election of the new CACD (Convention Action and Coordinating Directorate) board.

Bro. Dan Sulit and Bro. Art Santiago, of MBS and ICCM, respectively, topped the CACD elections, garnering a total votes of 171 and 154, respectively. Others in the new CACD Board are: Gener Alava, Ambrose Rodriguez, Erap Sison, Danny Calpito and Juan Bautista (Metro Manila representatives); Ernie Sta. Ana (CALABARZON); Sammy Batac (Central Luzon); Dan Roca (Ilocos region); Vic Dungo (Cagayan Valley); Rustom Pel (Bicol Region); Juanito Magbanua (Visayas) and Jonathan Obelidon (Mindanao). The newly elected CACD members will take-over after the next general Convention, which will be held in the summer of 2012 in Davao City, as announced and promoted during this Baguio forum.

Finally, it was announced that the next national fellowships of Christian men (KKK) and women (SPKK-National) shall be held in Nagsangalan, Vigan City (Ilocos Sur) on Nov. 26, 2011. (JSF blogs)

Two More CCNE Pastors Get License to Officiate Marriage

2 June 2011, Munoz, Nueva Ecija - Two more pastors under the Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija, Inc. (CCNE, Inc.) received Certificate of Authority to Solemnize Marriage (CRASM) issued by the National Statistics Office (NSO). They are Bro. Bartolome Bernardo, Jr. of Aliaga Church of Christ and Bro. Noel Alfonso of San Francisco Church of Christ. This addition brings to nine the total CCNE pastors authorized by the Philippine government to officiate marriage and similar Church rites like Children's dedication and thanksgiving.

The Soleminizing Officers' licenses are good for three years and may be renewed thereafter. Some CCNE solemnizing officers are authorized to operate province-wide, while some opted to operate only in their respective area (municipalities) of jurisdiction. (JSF Blogs)

From Nueva Ecija Via Calapan City On To Masaguisi Village: A Travelogue

12 May 2011 - Right after taking my breakfast, I left my home in Sto. Tomas, San Jose City (Nueva Ecija), boarded the Baliwag Bus passing along the highway (where I am) off to Cubao. Then, I transferred to another bus plying Batangas City on to the pier where fastcraft Supercat sail to and from Batangas-Calapan.

I need to be in Calapan that night for the final vigil of a brother-in-law Ronnie Foja, set to be interred on the following day, which is Friday, the 13th. I’m not quite fatalistic, as they said the date is a bad omen. But yes, the physical separation of loved ones really bring terrible sadness ala bad omen? Ronnie was put to a final rest at 1;30 PM at the panoramic memorial park in Calapan. From the memorial park, we proceeded to my home-village Masaguisi where my roots are.

It was not a very healthy arrival as my sister-in-law Mayet Falla is in the hospital in Roxas town, where she stayed for few days for certain health problem.
Along our way to visit Ate Mayet, we dropped-by at the house of a relative in Dayhagan to pay courtesy to our 79-year old cousin Manang Tinay, who live in their ancestral house with one of her daughter Janet. All of her other children are either in Manila or abroad like Germany and Dubai working. See how economic activities separate people.

Comes Sunday in Masaguisi, the worship time is 6 AM. It was not an ordinary Sunday, as the Church is filled with balik-barrio folks like cousins Raquel and Dina Bariata and family friends, Ate Violy and Kuya Andy Arciaga. I also met in the Church the KFC Team of the ICCM like Peter, Tin-tin, Velinda and Nyoy (spend worship service in Orconuma Church).

In the Church, DVBS pupils gave special numbers featuring the motion songs learned. There was also children’s dedication that time. It was indeed a happy Sunday full of blessings as I met not only God but also His people who had been endeared to me.
And for the rest of my brief visit in Mindoro, I went to old friends and relatives while enjoying the farm breeze and the fine beach Masaguisi.(SUNBEAM Ed)

Daughter Jonna and Grandson Kyle's Natal Days Remembered @ Home

Despite of their absence at home in Nueva Ecija, our family celebrated the birthdays of Jonna (May 17) and Kyle (May 19) in a simple dinner/salu-salo, attended by kins from Butuan City Susan and 2 daughters, and the Bulacso clan. Jonna turns 33 while Kyle is 9 years old. Jonna is with her husband Dominic in Japan for a military assignment, while Kyle stays with his father in Bulacan.

Central Luzon State University, Munoz, Nueva Ecija. 2 April 2011 - Over 50 "high-profile" and committed Christian leaders (ministers and elders mostly) of the newly SEC-registered Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija, Inc. The day-long program includes Praise and Worship hour; Presentation of Updates about the CCNE and Her para-Churches, namely, the CLEAN/KKK (Church Leaders' Association of Nueva Ecija/Kapisanan ng mga Kalalakihang Kristiano - Nueva Ecija), SPKKNE-Kababaihan (Christian Women's Association) and the SPKKNE-Kabataan (Christian Youth Fellowship); simultaneous seminars on Strategic Planning for Church Growth (Men's Sector) and Conducting Bible Studies and Practical Nursing (Women's Sector).

The forum also served as the venue for promoting the National Leaders' Convention (by CACD members Bro. Julmar Ayuno and Bro. Monching Doneza), and the ICCM ministry (by Dr. Cheryl Wissmann). Such was also an avenue for donating goods to the ICCM ministry like a cavan of rice from Ricarte Church, 2 bags of onions from Vega Church and Ms. Gisel, a friend of Sis. Rose Falla from Rizal town, and a few kilograms of rice from the Falla couple.

This visit to the country's rice granary, of brethren-missionaries from the Cornerstone Christian Church (Chicago, Illinois) was hosted by the CCNE, the Sto. Tomas Church of Christ in particular, the Anog's, Miguel's, Falla's and Juliano's families. Praises be to the Father. (JSF Blogs)

Rice Czar Vouches for the Immediate Implementation of PhilSCAT 2

The Philippine-Sino Center for Agricultural Technology (PhilSCAT), a bilateral program between the Philippines and the PROChina, is set to resume its Phase 2 operations very soon. Both governments, through the Phil. Dept. of Agriculture and PROC Ministry of Agriculture, have recently approved the sequel program aimed among others, at alleviating rural poverty by increasing farm productivity.

On March 3-4, 2011, the implementing details of the sequel program had been finalized in a workshop participated actively by DA rice program head and the acknowledged rice czar of the country Dr. Santiago R. Obien. Dr. Obien expresses strong support for the immediate continuation of the program as the country under Agri-Pinoy flagship of Pres. Noynoy is cramming for the 2013 self-sufficiency target. Mechanized hybrid rice farming system remains the banner program of PhilSCAT plus rural energy generation project adapting China's household and farm level biogas system.

In the original Phase 2 proposal of PhilSCAT, three more important commodities (as program scope) were added like Shaded Vegetable (Greenhousing system), Freshwater Aquaculture and Rice-Duck Culture. These were, however, deferred mainly because of budget slash on the part of the PROC government. PhilSCAT 2 proponents are keen on working on these added commodities using the local resources. They are currently looking for a mechanism by which these important rural poverty-alleviating strategies be introduced among the Filipino farmers.

Meanwhile, this blogger has signified his interest to work with PhilSCAT 2 after having been involved during the entire Phase 1 in 2003 - 2009 till he retired from his mother unit (PHilMech) last May 2010. (JSF Blogs)

11 Complete Bachelor of Theology Course @ ICCM

It's 11 for 2011. Yes, brethren, eleven Bachelor of Theology candidates graduated on March 19, 2011 from the CHED-accredited bible college the International Christian College of Manila (ICCM). They are: 1. Aringo, Vivian C. (major in Education), 2. Baysa, Peter John B. (Education), 3. Castillone, Lanie T. (Education), 4. Ebora, Maricris B. (Education), 5. Fernadez, Crispulo C. (Outreach), 6. Mendoza, Rolando V B. (Education), 7. Ranola, Ronald D. (Worship), 8. Silagan, Louie D. (Outreach), 9. Tablate, Ullysis C. (Worship), 10. Tamonde, Jay Lloyd E. (Education), and 11. Zamora, Franz Josef P. (Ministry).

The commencement exercises, which is the 3rd under post-CHED accreditation but 11th including the pre-CHED program, was held at the chapel of ICCM on March 19, with this year's theme Every tongue and tribe, a line from the class theme song "Halleluia to the Lamb", a classical Christian song inspired by the book of Revelation where on the final day, everyone and every tongue and tribe will glorify the Lamb of God.

Around 200-member audience witnessed the graduation representing the cross-section of ICCM family and friends from the neighboring churches.

An international choir (mostly Americans) from Faith Academy with Mr. Todd Eichenaver as Director, Mrs. Claire Miller, Accompanist and ICCM dean's son Andrew Wissmann as soloist, provided an intermission number during the graduation ceremonies. Prof. William Fierbaugh was the Guest Speaker, while Ms. Vivian Aringo provided the graduation message on behalf of their class.

The graduation ceremonies seem unique to ICCM as it follows a typical chapel program including an offertory challenge by the college president Prof. Arthur M. Santiago. The program was capped through picture-taking and a graduation lunch. (JSF Blogs)

The 24th National Rice R & D Conference, of which this blogger participated from day 1 closes today in a simple rite featuring the awarding of Best Paper and Best Poster.

As earlier reported, entries for both paper and poster competition were categorized on 4 thematic areas. Thus, 4 winners were declared for poster and paper competitions.

In the thematic category which I served as judge, the paper on " Using Cellphone-based Survey Forms for Rice Field Data Collection" won as No. 1 as presented by Mr. Arturo C. Arocena, Jr. (see photo 3, in green shirt).

Meanwhile, a fellow Church elder from Maligaya Church of Christ Bro. Engr. Arnold S. Juliano (photo 2 in red shirt) bagged the first place/award under thematic area Strategies to mitigate impact of and adopt to climate change, and other emeging problems besetting the rice industry. His paper is entitled Development of a Mobile Ricehull Gasifier Engine-Pump System.

In his closing remarks and vote of thanks, PhilRice executive director Atty. Ronilo A. Beronio acknowledge the participation of over 400 members of this 24th Conference, for their various roles played in the continuous development of rice industry. He underscored this year's theme of ". . . self-sufficiency by 2013" by soliciting cooperation from all sectors to attain such goal.

Blogger Acts as Judge in PhilRice 24th National R&D Conference

17 March 2011, PhilRice CES, Maligaya, Munoz Science City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. This blogger, along with select scientists from this science community, was commissioned by the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) to serve as evaluator in the 24th national rice conference held in this city from March 16 - 18, 2011.

He served as judge for Best Paper for "Technology Promotion and Delivery for Narrowing the Yield Gap" category. Three papers initially vied, and the top two were presented during the plenary session this afternoon. These papers are:

1. Using Cellphone-Based Survey Forms for Rice Field Data Collection

2. Theorizing ICT4D in Philippine Agriculture: Which Direction Should ICT in Philippine Agriculture Go?

The blogger-judge finds the two as both excellent studies, and in fact rated almost the same (with only a hairline difference). Final winner, however, is not known immediately, as ratings of other judges shall be considered.

Another scientific competition during the national conference was the search for Best Poster/s where a total of 81 entries representing four thematic areas : 1. Innovative technologies and approaches for boosting rice productivity, grain quality, and nutrition, 2. Strategies to mitigate impacts of and adapt to climate change, and other emerging problems besetting the rice industry, 3. Socio-economics, impact assessment, policy, and market, and, 4. Technology promotion and delivery for narrowing the yield gap.

The conference is an annual review of the national rice research conducted by the Institute and its partner organizations. This year's theme is "Optimizing 25-year R & D Achievements to help the country achieve rice self-sufficiency by 2013". (JSF Blogs)

Lealtad Church of Christ is Globally Competitive

Whenever I attend a particular Church the first time, I can not help but evaluate it based on the mandate for God's kingdom here on earth.

This Sunday, 13 March 2011, it was my privilege to worship and fellowship with Filipino brethren of Lealtad Church of Christ (LCC), after almost 3 decades of absence in this Church. I was studying then at UP Los Banos (1971-76) when I occasionally come to LCC upon the invitation of kins from Mindoro whose Manila Church membership were with LCC. This was repeated today upon the invitation of one of the elders, Bro. Remy Baladjay, where I spoke on the pulpit on the message Christian Maturity.

LCC church programming and monthly activities are definitely at par with international Churches I attended (like the Tokyo Union Church, Churches of Christ/Christian Churches in California and English congregations of Christian Churches in China, where I frequently visiting). LCC worship program is well-organized, choir is wonderful, and evangelistic activities like Jail ministry are simply God-glorifying. Youth and senior citizens sectors are well taken-care of in this local Church. LCC also support consistently Theology students of seminaries and bible colleges. The Church facilities and infrastructures were much improved coping-up with the increasing Church-goers. The pastoral house, kitchen, comfort rooms, classrooms, etc. were highly convenient.

The effectivity of their licenses to officiate marriage is from February 2011 until Dec. 31, 2013, or three years.

American Missionaries To Speak in the CCNE Fellowship and Seminar

Three American missionaries will conduct a one-day seminar for the Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija, Inc. (CCNE) on April 2, 2011 at the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) Interfaith Chapel. The 3 missionaries came from the Cornerstone Christian Church, USA. They will be in the country as guest faculty of the Internatinal Christian College of Manila (ICCM). The seminar is being arranged by ICCM president Prof. Arthur M. Santiago, in coordination with the CCNE Christian Education Committee chair Dr. Josue S. Falla.

The CCNE seminar speakers are Scott Adkins, Cathy Wright and Regina Hamilton. They will be accompanied by another long-time American missionary to the Philippines, Dr. Cheryl Wissmann. As tentatively programmed, Scott will speak on Church Strategic Planning, giving ideas on how to manage transition from a small Church (30 - 50 members) to a medium to large Church (at least 100 members). Cathy, on the other hand, will provide tips on Women Counselling answering the question how to create women support to counsel younger women in the Church. Regina will discuss two topics, "Bible Studies for Women" and "Practical Nursing".

The institutional affiliations (Cornerstone Christian Church and the Kingdom's Ambassador) of these missionaries were both aimed at building-up God's kingdom, and spreading New Testament Christianity through education and related strategies. Their partner institution in the Philippines is the International Christian College of Manila (ICCM), a Bible college of the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement where the Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija, Inc. A Post-Valentines' Travelogue of a Hometown Visit

As part of my further "enjoying" an early retirement from the government service, I took time-out for 2 weeks at my hometown in Masaguisi in Oriental Mindoro from Feb. 16 to 25, 2011.

The usual serenity, slow, placid and easy life in Masaguisi remains, while the feeling of solitudes, that is the presence with mother nature, is still very evident – calm sea, lush mangrove mini-forest, cold breeze and the sounds of insects and chirping birds. A round in my rice farms usually bring me back to my boyhood memories, when I stayed there as my father’s farmhand.

Same old faces of the barrio folks mixed with the new faces of today’s generation abound in a community seemingly detached from the busy urban life; people with unique intonation in their language used, you can easily determine whether one is a native of Masaguisi through his twang and accent.

May be incidental, but this 10-day break in my far-flung hometown coincides with rare but important happenings : (1) Korean mission medical team with the guidance of ICCM president Pastor Arthur Santiago, conducted a day-long medical service in Masaguisi where over a hundred patients availed of the free services. (2) Another coincidence, our dear neighbour Mrs. Lilia Fernandez, who we fondly called Aling Lilia died in Manila hospital on the day of my arrival in Masaguisi (Feb. 16), whose children were my playmates of yesteryears. I was able to attend the nightly vigil for 5 consecutive nights, as their house was just a step away from our ancestral house.

Being one of the few highly educated (Ph.D holder) residence of Masaguisi, churchmates and old friends always invite me to speaking engagements, and whenever necessary, I accept such invitations. This time, I’ve got at least 4 speaking engagements – during the send-off fellowship for the Korean Medical Team on Feb. 17; during the Sunday worship service on Feb. 20, and twice during the week-long wake of my neighbour Aling Lilia, who is also a sister-in-Christ. I was also requested to recall and list-down names of my fellow graduates at Masaguisi Elem. School (MES), Class of 1967 (whew, good that my memory still serves me well). I guess it will be used as reference for the upcoming MES grand reunion on April 2-3, 2011.

My final day in Masaguisi was rather emotional and tear-jerking as Aling Lilia was put to her final rest. Typical of barrio funeral tradition, a crowd trooped to the chapel to pay their final respect to the beloved barriomate. Yet, I find the funeral program in the Church spiritually inspiring. Right after the Church service, her remains were moved to the nearby cemetery, the only one in the place.

People in Masaguisi just come and go. Soon, I’ll be one of its senior citizens, as I wish to stay there most of my retirement days. (JSF Blogs)

Youth of Nueva Ecija Cluster 5 Churches @ Christian Love Fellowship

13 February 2011, PhilRice Social Hall, Nueva Ecija - Close to a hundred young (unmarried) couples took time-out on the eve of Valentine's Day to join the fellowship of six local Churches under Cluster 5 of Nueva Ecija. Dubbed as Christian Love Fellowship, this gathering of young Christians was held at the Social Hall of the Philippine Rice Research Institute, celebrating the Hearts' Day with the theme, Love or Lust?

Bro. Melchor Gervacio, senior pastor of San Francisco Church of Christ was the main speaker, who in his message, differentiated Love from Lust. He expounded the Love chapter of I Corinthians 13, by contrasting it, among others, with Lust, as experienced by some Old Testament characters. He identified some end-products of lust such as rape, prostitution, living-in concept, lustful sights, and so on. He challenged the youth to be wise in accepting a relationship, and examine whether it is really for love or lust.

Meanwhile during the night, a new set of CYF officers for Cluster 5 were inducted by Bro. Gervacio, with Bro. Rommel Pantanilla of Sto. Tomas Church of Christ as the president.

Other activities of the night include Praise & Worship, Games, Special Numbers per Church (STCC youth, middle photo), and merienda. Some parents and Church leaders of these young people were also in attendance (last photo). (JSF Blogs)

Personal View on Angelo Reyes' Hara-kiri

I seldom post in my personal blogsite political issues, but maybe due to a hangover of my recent month-long visit to Japan, I can't help but share my piece of thought on what happened to the honorable general.

Angelo Reyes did a hara-kiri, a Japanese suicide rite in bid to preserve one's good reputation till the end of his life. This is never a Filipino culture, and one may find it unChristian, weird, silly and what have you. But among the Japanese, this is moral and honorable. Usually, Japanese hara-kiri is done in the temple or any holy place. In the case of Reyes, he did it at the tomb of his beloved mom, holy among Japanese and Chinese, for their culture called filial piety, where they worship old creatures.

Reyes was a victim of a cruel political system, and perhaps treachery of close friends. Among the Japanese, that's the worst thing that ever happens to one's professional life - betrayal by the institution he belongs. That's why, in Japan, everybody is bowing their heads before entering and leaving one's workplace. They place premium on the institution they are in, and not on the post they hold. Thus, if you ask a Japanese what is his work, he would answer and give, the name of the organization (e.g. Sanyo Company) rather than his position (e.g. Company Manager or Clerk).

I tend to believe that Reyes chose to safeguard the military institution he once worked, rather than his very life, amidst the controversy at the time of his death. To the Reyes family, our deep condolences Filipino-style. (JSF Blogs)

Ateneo Grade School Pupils Simulate Bigay-Puso Spirit: A Reflection

8 February 2011 @ Ateneo Grade School Dept. As the Hearts Day is fast-approaching, the Ateneo grade school pupils are taught how to share love and affection with their less fortunate counterpart from the Payatas Elementary School. This was done today through a joint class-meeting and interaction between the two schools (Ateneo and Payatas) dubbed as Bigay-Puso.

Representing as Kyle F. Taruc's (Grade 2-Kanlaon) guardians, this blogger and his wife Rosalina participated in this exercise. Here's our observations and reflections to that excellent teaching methodology.

The activity is highly commendable for teaching values. Children are induced to do good to the less fortunate, like sharing of merienda and books, and encouraged to exchange learnings and talents. Games that promote friendship were played, and the participating pupils were helped build more self-confidence.

With teacher Ms. Ariette Pacle of Grade 2-Kanlaon as the overseer, the participating mothers/guardians as led by CPO Mrs. Hyacinth acted as the learning facilitators, paving the way of the children to the right direction and expectations.

With that exercise, we observed significant differences between the two groups (pupils from Ateneo and Payatas) physically and socially. Children from Payatas are generally smaller (in height and weight) with signs of nourishment deficiency, and seem generally reserved and lack self-confidence. Yet, we can observe that both groups enjoyed and expressed happiness for the entire period of exercise, without any feeling of discrimination.

While this experience is excellent for both groups, value formation is a process which may require longer time. Values are better caught than taught. Observed values (during the exercise) may only be superficial. It can and should be reinforced at home, church and company. Yet, such Bigay-Puso program can be a very good springboard for value formation and development required of our society.

The mother/guardian-facilitators are fortunate enough to witness the exercise, as they can reinforce this experience in their homes. It is not enough for the mother to limit her love and discipline to her own child. She must also share these good values to the company and other people surrounding her child, so she could build good influence and create a multiplier-effect in the society.

To be "motherly" is fine, but sometimes, motherly love is confined only to her child. I think that is not ideal for a good society. Motherly love should be oozing-out, not only to her own child, but to other children as well, as "no man is an island" as one saying goes.

The host class (Grade 2-Kanlaon) we observed seems to be an excellent example to emulate, as shown in the postings and decorations around - Most Clean, Pinaka-maagap, High-Pointers in Sports (Blue Eagle) and what have you. Teacher Ariette really deserves commendation for the job well-done.

Finally, I wish that more exercises like this, be replicated in other schools as a form of excellent "cross-fertilization" adapting and/or transferring good values from one pupil to another. Afterall, God created all the children equal. Inequality like poverty came to the Payatas children only by accident. No one likes to be born poor.

On the sideline, this is not a showbiz gossip - it is true that Ms. Cherry Pie Pecache, that fine actress-celebrity, is a very active mother-guardian of Ateneo Grade School pupils, having her son studying in this school. We saw her very busy during this Bigay-Puso program. (Dr. J. Falla Blogs)

GE Oldies and Still Goodies

Three long-time GE brethren with their families, gathered in this blogger's house in Sto. Tomas, Nueva Ecija for a brief bonding moments. California-based Bro. Jerry Corrales and his family, (who are now in the country for a short visit) dropped-by on their way from Gattaran, Cagayan to Manila. Joining this brief get-together was also a batchmate in UPLB, seldomly seen in the brotherhood of Gamma Epsilon, Bro. Eloy aka Ulo (for Eulogio) Montealto. (Hey brethren, this is really a rare opportunity that you see Eloy, even on pix, huh.)

Bro. Jerry, fondly known in the brotherhood as Jerico, is a successful entrepreneur, having operated a Carehome Facility in Riverside, Cal. He is a GE batchmate in UPLB Omega Chapter back in 1973. He got a lovely wife and 3 smart children, now all established in Riverside. They played host to our family visit in US two years back.

Bro. Eloy is an executive (Planning chief) at the Philippine Carabao Center. A successful professional in the field of Livestock science, Eloy chose to maintain his single-blessedness, and seemed happy of it.

Another dinner meeting is tenderred by GEi (UPLB Omega) for Bro. Jerico on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Cafe Angelica, Anos, Los Banos, Laguna. Brethren in the vicinities are enjoined to come. (Bro. Josh Blogs)

My 2011 Ministry Involvement

"Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. . . of Matthew 6:33", is always one of my New Year's resolutions, and I claim the promise of "all these things shall be added unto you." How great Thou art, oh God!

For 2011, I believe God gave me the following ministry involvement, and I'm accepting them without much ado.

1. As one of the Church elders of Sto. Tomas Church of Christ, with regular Sunday celebration at the CLSU Interfaith chapel, 8 AM.

2. As director of SUNBEAM ministry, a family-led ministry which include the production and distribution of SUNBEAM newsmagazine at least semi-annually.

3. As professor and BOT chair of the International Christian College of Manila (ICCM), the bible college of the Campbell-Stone Restoration Movement with campus in Antipolo City.

4. As officer (secretary) of the newly SEC-registered Church of Christ in Nueva Ecija, Inc. (CCNE) elected during the Dec. 2010 Cambitala Convention.

5. As Nueva Ecija coordinator of the 4th National Church Leaders' Convention (NCLC) in Baguio City on June 10-11, 2011, as appointed by the CACD with its president Bro. Ernie Sta. Ana.

6. As Nueva Ecija coordinator of Christian Men's sector (KKK-National), a national para-Church organization with CLEAN as provincial counterpart.

Back Home Sweet Home from Japan. . . Sayonara!

25 January 2011 - I and wife Rose are finally back home here in Sto. Tomas, San Jose City (Nueva Ecija) after a month-long sojourn to Japan. As you may expect, we are currently taking the much-needed rest, while restoring and cleaning the house. (This is always the price of taking a vacation, pagkatapos ng sarap, here comes hirap, right?).

My local contact details resume, i.e. mobilephone and my daily whereabouts. My work at PhilRice ends last Dec. 31, and I am not renewing it at the moment. I have other plans this year, but my commitment every Sunday in the Church at CLSU, and classes at ICCM (my Bible college) remains.

Finally, I am pleased to share herewith some of our final activities in Japan. Last Saturday, we joined the people of US Base in Atsugi explore the Mt. Fuji by visiting parks at the footsteps of this world-famous volcano (pls. see separate posting).

We spent our final Sunday here in the ecumenical Church inside the Base, where Roman Catholics and Protestant Christians share the religious facilities, e.g. same chapel with different time slots as to its use. Another unique experience for me, as this arrangement seems hardly possible among Filipino Christians. Sharing the Church facilities among different Protestant denominations is common (just like my very own local Church group is sharing with the Methodist group the University Inter-faith Chapel). But mixing Roman Catholics and Protestants . . . something new to me.

After worship, we watched Jonna's final rehearsal on Body Combat for their show on Tuesday, Jan. 25. (I'll try to post video clips soon). After which, we started preparing everything for our Monday flight. Time to go then. . . sayonara sweet, sweet Japan! (JSF Blogs)

Japan's Mt. Fuji as Viewed from 3 Prefectures We Visited

On this last Saturday (Jan. 22) of ours in Japan, children Dominic and Jonna enlisted us to the Tour organized by the US Base, where we visited the famous Mt Fuji of Japan.

According to our tour guide Miki-san, of the 43 prefectures in Japan, this highest volcano in the country can be viewed (at least its peak) from 23 prefectures.

Thanks God, it's Friday and it's snowing in the volcanic mountains of Hakone. Today, we (Jonna, mom and I; Dominic is on-duty) spent our day in Hakone, one of the tourists' destination, which is around two hours away by train from Ayase-shi. Thus, we woke-up early; off we go to Hakone.

Mutton curry, nan bread, etc @ Rani Resto

As part of our journey in the Land of the Rising Sun, our children Jonna and Dominic required us to taste different foods as "gastronomic" survey so-called. We've been to Chinese cuisine, Japanese, Vietnamese, American, Italian, and where else.

This dinner (posted here) is in one of the nearby Indian restaurant named RANI. For me, the foods were okay, just as I ate and enjoyed when I was in Andra Pradesh years back - textured vegetables, mutton, yogart, curry, and that ocean of nan, an Indian bread a la bibingka (rice cake) of the Philippines. Perry-san and Masaguisi Folks in Tokyo

Everyone in our far-flung village in the tribe of Mangyans (aborigins of Mindoro) called Masaguisi knows me (fondly called Dodong) and Sofery F. Bonquin-Rio (aka Perry-san in Tokyo), we being bonafide people of such old, antique barrio. It was a rare opportunity that people from secluded place meet in one of the most modern sophisticated city of Tokyo.

That, exactly happened to me (with wife Rose, daughter Jonna and son-in-law Dominic) and Perry (with daughters Bing2, Ming2 and niece Joy). Lol, I and Dominic were surrounded by beauteous Japayukis (literally means Japanese ladies). Perry has been in Japan for over 28 years, and surely she and her family have adapted already the local culture. They all speak Nippongo.

While Jonna and Dominic had been touring us in many beautiful places of Japan, tonight (Sunday eve) is a one-night stand with Perry-san (lol), who treated us in a typical Japanese dinner. We certainly enjoyed the Japanese food amidst stories reminiscing Masaguisi of yesteryears. Everybody can very well relate, as all of us had been to that dead-end barrio (from Manila one will end up at the Pacific Ocean).

Yokohama's Raumen Museum and Sky Garden

It's Friday, Jan. 14. We visited the famous Raumen house in Shi-Yokohama, a museum featuring the evolution of raumen (noodles) industry in Japan. The place brought us back in the 1920's, with the ambience of yesteryears, including the motiff and the music around.

From here, we moved to

Yokohama's Sky Garden at the 69th floor of Landmark (building) which enables everyone to see the entire

beauty of this Japan's 2nd largest city. To get there, one has to ride the fastest elevator in the world at a speed of 750 m per minute, as the Guinness Book of World Records reported.

Complete Relaxation @ Oedo-Onsen Monogatari

Japanese normally spend their weekends in this place called Oedo-Onsen Monogatari. It is a complete place to relax after week-long of hardwork. Daughter Jonna As Gym Instructress in Japan

I was trying to upload a sample of video clips I took from today's session of Jonna as physical instructress in a gymnasium inside USA Naval Air Facility in Atsugi (Japan), but it was not successful, as the video was more than the allowable size limit, (and I have not learned yet how to edit them). Thus, posted here are the still pictures of our today's activity joining her and Dominic inside the base.

As military installations, security in the base is very strict, and a visitor (like us) has to undergo screening and identification before a gate pass is issued. Furthermore, the visitor's gate pass is still limited in terms of facilities allowed for guests, who should always be accompanied by the insiders. Yes, not because I look like a terrorist, huh, but it's an SOP, so to speak. Nevertheless, we enjoy every time we are inside the base. (Josh Blogs)

"Coming of Age" Holiday @ Japan and the Enoshima Nagisa

As generally known, Japan is rich in festivities and celebrations. Today, Monday is the so-called the festival of the "Coming of Age", wherein young people especially ladies who turned 20 as of today, go to the temples for prayers. They were clad in native kimono accompanied by their family. May be this is likened to the "Debutant" of western culture, which is specially celebrated too.

On this non-working day here in Japan, again, our children Jonna and Dominic brought us in an island where a park and temple known as "Enoshima Nagisa" is. We toured this area and enjoyed sea foods like broiled squids, rare kinds of shell-fish and the local broiled potato with butter. (JSF Blogs)

Asakusa, Ginza and Odaiba After Church

After spending our 2nd Sunday in Japan at the 8:30 AM -Worship at Tokyo Union Church (TUC), we were toured by our children Jonna

and Dominic, and a family friend Sofery Bonquin in 3 wonderful tourists' spots in Tokyo, namely :

1. Asakusa, this is another Buddhist and Shinto Temple where local and foreign tourists troop for both religious and leisure purposes.

2. Ginza, this is a commercial cum recreation street, where one can walk freely without vehicle traffic. Also a rendezvous for promenaders and barkadas.

3. Odaiba, a reclamation area turned haven for

commercial and recreational activities. Photos posted here speak for themselves.

Having worked with Chinese colleagues for the last 6 years at the Philippine-Sino Center for Agricultural Technology (PhilSCAT), and having visited China annually since 2001, it seems that I am in China again for spending our day in the Chinatown at Yokohama.

Minimally Processed Agri-Products@Vinawalk Mall (Still in Japan)

This afternoon, we went to a nearby mall to buy some food items for our kitchen. My attention was caught by how Japanese handle agricultural products like fruits, vegetables, flowers and sea-products. They were packaged neatly and presentably, so attractive to the consuming public. Processing is likewise generally different from us Filipinos. Japanese food vendors were more into "minimal processing", although ready-to-eat food products are also a common sight. Minimal processing is really the general practice, so that consumers have some share in the preparation of final food-product, and that the end-product is freshly cooked.

Japanese are very conscious of the quality of food products. They are so discriminating in terms of the content (analysis), expiration date and nutritive value, typical of people in advanced economy. Ask what's the general stance of Japanese on GMO products, I think they are "positive" on this modern-technology agri-products, as some genetically modified agri-products can be seen in the market like that cubic watermelon.

Here in our base station in Atsugi, one can experience the peace and security of the US base for its populace, and the economic progress typical of Japan's prefectures. One can experience and mingle with the pragmatic, frank Americans, and the courteous self-disciplined Japanese.

Romancing with Yokohama Bay By the Sunset

4 January 2011, Yokohama City. Spent the day at Yokohama, sister city of Tokyo, where the Cosmo World, a paradise to both children and adults alike is. Reminisced our younger days by riding in that giant ferrish-wheel overlooking the bay and Mt. Fuji. Took some kind of merienda-cena in one famous eatery in the Queen's Square and the usual malling-walk.

Get back to our base via railway system so fast and convenient. Truly, a taste of sophisticated lifestyle in a developed economy a la rich and famous for me and wife Rose. (JSF Blogs)

Following the Road Less Travelled : Travelogue@Dec2

“The Road Less Travelled” was the sermon of Pastor Barry Dawson of Tokyo Union Church this first Sunday of 2011, our first time in this international congregation of interdenominational Christians. Daughter Jonna and husband Dominic used to attend here, and this day is but a fitting one to start our year right.

Following “the road less travelled” refers to walking with Jesus He being the Light of the world. On this Epiphany Sunday so-called, the three wise men (magi) from the East (Iran now?) with the guide of the star finally find baby Jesus, and worship Him. And for this New Year, it is an opportune time to ponder on our life’s journey, as the Pastor said, forgetting the past grudges and hatred in our hearts, and start following “the road less travelled”.

From this Church, we proceeded to our lunch at a nearby Mall.
